Youcun Qi, Research Scientist (CIMMS/NSSL WRDD)
Background: | Ph.D. Meteorology, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (2011) M.S. Meteorology, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (2008) B.S. Computer Science, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (2005) |
Experience: | Youcun Qi originally hails from China, and earned his bachelor’s in computer science and Master’s degrees in meteorology from Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology. Upon completion of his Master’s in 2008, Youcun came to Oklahoma as a CIMMS research scientist working with NSSL’s Warning Research & Development Division. His focus was design and development of radar QPE algorithms. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in 2011, then started working with CIMMS and NSSL on research-to-operations projects, algorithm development, and technology transfers. |
What He Does: | Youcun works closely with NSSL’s WRDD on several research programs. Notably, he was an integral part of the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor project, which was awarded the Department of Commerce’s Silver Medal in 2015 “for successful transition of the Multi-Radar, Multi-Sensor system into operations to provide critical radar-based products to forecast weather hazards.” Youcun has been listed as author or co-author on a number of significant publications during his tenure with CIMMS and NSSL, including “Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) Quantitative Precipitation Estimation: Initial Operating Capabilities,” “Improving WSR-88D Radar QPE for Orographic Precipitation Using Profiler Observations,” and “Correction of Radar QPE Errors Associated with Low and Partially Observed Brightband Layers.” |
Trivia: | One big milestone for Youcun on 2016 has been the birth of his daughter !!! |
