{"id":4901,"date":"2018-08-06T15:06:08","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T20:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.nssl.noaa.gov\/nsslnews\/?p=4901"},"modified":"2018-08-06T16:32:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-06T21:32:13","slug":"mping-awarded-for-help-in-operational-meteorology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inside.nssl.noaa.gov\/nsslnews\/2018\/08\/mping-awarded-for-help-in-operational-meteorology\/","title":{"rendered":"mPING awarded for help in operational meteorology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Weather Association recently awarded the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mping.nssl.noaa.gov\/\">mPING<\/a>\u00a0 development team for help the application has provided in meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteorological Phenomena Identification Near the Ground &#8211; or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MPING-110367635704016\/\">mPING<\/a> &#8211; team was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/nwas.org\/annual-meeting-events\/nwa-annual-awards-program\/\">Larry R. Johnson Special Award<\/a> for significantly contributing to operational meteorology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For creating the mPING applications which improved forecast operations by significantly increasing the number, quality, and type of ground-truth weather observations.\u200b&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>NWA will present the award during its annual meeting in late August. Individuals or groups must be nominated for the Larry R. Johnson Special Award.<\/p>\n<p>MPING is a project by NOAA&#8217;s National Severe Storms Laboratory and the University of Oklahoma Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies.
