{"id":4147,"date":"2017-03-14T13:12:07","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T18:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.nssl.noaa.gov\/nsslnews\/?p=4147"},"modified":"2024-08-23T15:20:52","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T20:20:52","slug":"vortexmediaday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inside.nssl.noaa.gov\/nsslnews\/2017\/03\/vortexmediaday\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Begin Second Year of Tornado Study in Southeastern United States"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The second field observing campaign for the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment-Southeast (<span id=\"0.9497173936856607\" class=\"currentHitHighlight\">VORTEX<\/span>-SE) research program, coordinated by the National Severe Storms Laboratory, began March 8 and continues through May 8. <span class=\"contextualExtensionHighlight ms-font-color-themePrimary ms-border-color-themePrimary ident_327_443\">A media day will be held at 10 a.m. CDT March 21 at the Signature Flight Support \u2013 Huntsville International Airport.\u00a0<\/span>Researchers from NSSL, Air Resources Laboratory, University of Alabama \u2013 Huntsville and other participants will discuss their operational plans and show some of the vehicles and instruments they are using, including the NOAA P-3 aircraft, mobile radars and research drones.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"0.25786477826679355\" class=\"highlight\">VORTEX<\/span>-SE is a research program designed to understand how environmental factors characteristic of the southeastern United States affect the formation, intensity, structure and path of tornadoes in this region. <span id=\"0.7072824735441463\" class=\"highlight\">VORTEX<\/span>-SE will also determine the best methods for communicating forecast uncertainty to the public and evaluate public response related to these events.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This year\u2019s field project will gather data to address two main research topics:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. How cold air flowing out of a storm influences the development of tornadoes.<\/p>\n<p>2.
